Tyrannical Bells

HamesHallBellCloseupThey call us to worship, call us to arms
and jar us awake with strident alarms.
When lashed by their trills, we gnash at their sting!
Tyrannical bells need only to ring!

We turn to their chimes; we tremble to gongs.
They toll, and we sing our ritual songs.
When knells herald death, the tears from us spring!
Tyrannical bells need only to ring!

Their clamorous clangs alert us to run,
commence with our work or stop having fun.
To schedules they time, we servilely cling!
Tyrannical bells need only to ring!

The bells in our lives have rendered passé
circadian rhythms, nighttime and day.
We’re puppets controlled by carillon string!
Tyrannical bells need only to ring!
