Princess Sonnet

This form was invented by Allan R. Emery, aka Joe King on Allpoetry.
“The same as any Sonnet form as far as syllable count and end rhymes. The difference is that the rhyme is reversed for the first syllable (or syllables) of each line.
For example: An English sonnet is abab cdcd efef gg so in an English Princess Sonnet the beginning rhyme would be reversed: baba dcdc fefe gg (or hh, as you can use a new beginning rhyme for the couplet if you wish) where the couplet would begin and end with a rhyming syllable (or multiple syllables if you can pull it off).
An Italian sonnet would have an end rhyme of: abba abba cdecde, which would mean the start rhyme for an Italian Princess Sonnet would be baab baab edcedc (or baab baab efcefc). This will give the sonnet a cascading quality when read aloud. Often a rhyme will repeat as it ends one line and begins the next. Other times the two end rhymes of a quatrain will be next to one another as well, with one ending one line and the other beginning the next. Done with forethought, it will not be apparent that the sonnet is any different except to a very disciplined eye or ear. Yet, the rhythm and intonation that doubling the number of rhymes in a sonnet creates unquestionably makes the sonnet more like a song.
With this, An English Sonnet with a beginning rhyme is an English Princess Sonnet. An Italian Sonnet with a beginning rhyme becomes and Italian Princess Sonnet. Etc. If you wish, you can have the same rhyme begin and end each line, which would be a Mirrored English Princess Sonnet, etc.”
***** Notice that you can use 2, 3, or 4 syllable rhymes if you can pull them off. However, the most interesting would be the first syllable of the start rhyme and the last syllable of the end rhyme, hence: ‘Mental’ as a first rhyme would rhyme with ‘detriment’ as an end rhyme.****

Visser Sonnet

I am exceptionally glad to add this Sonnet form to my list.
Insofar, as I know it is the only sonnet form to be created by one of the States’ Poet Laureates.

I found no specific column mandated for the internal rhyme
Apparently Volta is up to the poet.

With Hidden Rhyme     (Visser Sonnet)

A Visser Sonnet may be hard to find,
or recognize when you do, for the rhyme
is hidden from your view except when read
aloud, then it will play.  It’s internal
and nicely tucked away inside each line.
It could be blank verse too, if iams rule,
for while that form if true, denies end-rhyme
it’s mute about the way one  acts inside.

Yet Visser earned our praise as she was South
Dakota’s poet queen- well, laureate,
the only one of such to make this mark.
Let us our glasses raise in toast and write
a sonnet now to bring this latent form
to life and add a touch of difference.

Shadow Sonnet

May be written in any sonnet style. The Shadow takes place at the beginning and ending of each line as the words are identical or homophonic words or
their derivatives.

Speak not in anger, though mad when you speak.
Compose yourself then attempt to compose
phrases defining call to act, phrases
filled not with blame, but requests I can fill.

Partners resolve issues when as partners
they proceed- each understanding that they
own both messages, not merely their own.
I want my final words to be, “Aye aye.”

Wait while upsets subside. It’s worth the wait.
Care taken framing talk is proof you care.
Help smoothing objections is a big help
solving any problem which we must solve.

Nighttime brings closeness with romance of night.
Whispered concerns vanish with a whisper.

Nevada Sonnet

A Nevada Sonnet is merely a Fourteener with required, consistent internal rhyme occurring at the same syllable in each line.  The idea is to keep the Alexandrine meter from falling apart under its own weight.  This is all about making the sonnet a more cohesive unit.
Metrics: 14 lines written in Iambic heptameter
Rhyme Pattern:  Any sonnet pattern known to man, including blank verse.
Defining characteristic:  An internal rhyme pair in consistent position on each line.
Volta optional.
Example Poem:
I’ve Killed   (Nevada Sonnet)
An atheist, an agnostic, a Christian and a fool,
I’ve been deist, and quite caustic toward what I’ve  deemed fraud.
I’ve been a lout who wielded clout, a bureaucrat, a tool,
an entrepreneur, full of manure, and… some things to laud.
I’ve killed, and not in war.  For that my soul is sore.  The rest
I can amend or change my friend, but that’s indelible.
I killed what meant most to me.  His ghost I see- on rare nights.
Mercy killing, though culture willing, is not correctable.
I killed my dying pup.  Defying reason, conscience stings.
I was too small then to quell all life with one mighty blow.
I had to hit ,and cry and hit, hit again.  Of all things
I’ve ever done, that is the one that haunts.  Empathy so
flows to dogs that all my life, says my wife, I’ve felt more pain
for them then men.  That may be so until we meet again.

Dual Sonnet

Dual Sonnet

Rhyme Scheme:  Any*
The defining characteristic of this form is that it contains
two correct Sonnet rhyme patterns.
Therefore I present none here, you may choose from more than a hundred I have indentified to date.

*The poem should be written in the meter with the line length specified for the poem for identified by the end-rhyme pattern you select.

The location of the volta is also dictated by that poem type.

Here is the author’s own explanation:
This Dual Sonnet (Envelope, English) One Sonnet rhyme is executed on the sixth syllable of each line and another sonnet written in the traditional way. The rhymes are notated below in small and caps because “a” does not have to rhyme with “A”. Dual sonnets can use any two different rhyme schemes to create the poem. This one is notated below:

Don’t Knock It          (Dual Sonnet)

I guess we use this form to artfully malign
the grumblers with no style, who commonly complain.
Most poets grin or smile when treading new terrain,
but whining’s oft the norm where no new change is fine.

Let’s not be bashing thoughtful critiques showing spine,
but those who crowd the aisle and point and mock the new
as something not worthwhile if not the old world view.
As poet we should not eschew all new design.

Yet what for years has charmed, and struck us as divine
has done so all the while with its attractiveness.
Don’t think that I’ll revile the old or like it less
because I’m newly armed with forms I’ll help design

A new form may beguile, then fade, and so decline,
or might it  age awhile, improve in fact, like wine?

This particular sonnet is based upon the
SC’s Crybaby Tear Flow  Sonnet and Betwixt Sonnet
[abba acca adda aa]                             [abba cbbc dbbd bb]
for end-rhyme and internal rhyme respectively.

AA Sonnet – 12 Step Sonnet

This sonnet was invented by Larry Eberhart, aka, Lawrencealot

It steals a page from the Burmese poem form know a Ya Du, in that it uses staircase-rhyme as well as end-rhyme.

The sonnet can be written in either Iambic or Trochaic Tetrameter or Pentameter. The form is different for each, because of the 12-Step internal rhyme pattern.

The Tetrameter version is three quatrains and a couplet,

Rhyme Patter n:    abab cdcd efef gg

The internal rhyme has the first syllable rhyming with the For each stanza the first syllable in line 1 

rimes with the 2nd syllable in line2
with the 3rd syllable in line 3, and
with the 4th syllable in line 3.

The Petrameter version is two sestets and a couplet.

Rhyme Pattern is  abcabc dedede ff
The same scheme is applied to each stanza as was used in
the tetramter version, except at Line 4, and L10 new
rhyme sounds are selected.  (This limiting required rhymes to three)

NO Volta is required, but may be used anywhere at poet’s discretion.


Restraint       (AA Sonnet – 12 Step Sonnet)

A drunk husband with rifle in the door. 

That day I was the fourth cop there, so went 
right away to the rear of that small house. 
The cops were talking – they would talk some more. 
A danger now stalked we hoped to prevent. 
I found window unlocked, with view of spouse. 

Beyond the wife was man with back to me, 

and he was never looking back my way. 
Quietly, I slide open my entry, 
but paused- negotiations underway 
were calming him, though he held the gun he 
did not point, so I showed restraint that day. 

Entering that room I’d have been a fuse- 

With not a lot to gain and much to lose.
