I’ve Loved You Too Long to Become a Metaphor

Old strangers are free
with their advice and aphorisms.
Respect is earned through length of years,
and yet, I’ve loved you too long to become a metaphor,
and have made too many mistakes to become a cliché.
So please forgive me for striking your fancy,
and I will bless you for leaving me face up
in the mud –three swords protruding
from my chest.
