Might we again relearn what once was known
To forebears long ago but somehow lost
By later generations–scorned and tossed
Aside like fads or childish play outgrown?
How can we ever hope now to atone
For playing God despite the social cost
Of civic Rubicons first neared, then crossed?
It’s human nature, life that we bemoan!
Not all that glitters shall be proven gold.
From idle wishing, riches never sprout.
This, long experience and time have shown
To simplest minds and gilded tomes of old.
With common sense and skeptics’ healthy doubt
Might we again relearn what once was known.
