Sestina Sonnet

The Sestina Sonnet is written in ten-syllable lines (usually iambic pentameter) and is structured with three stanzas; three quatrains(four-line stanzas) and a concluding couplet(a two-line stanza). The interesting thing about the Sestina Sonnet is that it actually doesn’t rhyme. It retains the Sestina qualities by repeating the end-words of lines throughout the piece.

The four words that end the lines of the first stanza, end the lines of the other two stanzas, in a different order each time. The last stanza, uses two of those words per line, with one in the middle and one at the end of the line.

Example poem

Tell Me of Your Anger in Whispers (Sestina Sonnet)

Don’t start a message with an angry word

for voice will carry tones that are not right

for saying what is needed to be heard.

An angry start can last until the night.

Daytime travails get pushed away at night

and ‘ere we sleep all problems should be heard.

Tell me I’ve goofed without an angry word.

We’ll fix it, regardless of who is right.

Experience shows that you’re usually right

unless you misunderstood deed or word.

A certain magic when we talk at night

yields solutions from voices that are heard.

You will be heard and things will work out right.

Tell me at night by way of whispered word.

Salamanders’ Fireburst

This is a sonnet form invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines.
It is stanzaic, consisting of three quatrains and a non-rhyming couplet.
Iy id metric, written in either iambic pentameter or iambic tetrameter.

 Example poem

Tramp Stamp 777LLY     (Salamander’s Fireburst)
I don’t know why my daddy named his car.
He named it Lilly, and my mom don’t care.
He says she’s has a soft top that he fancies
and that she’s got a tramp-stamp right back there,
and she’s his ride and carries his guitar.
To name her after mom would be too chancy;
she’s square,  demure and won’t attract a copper
and her tramp-stamp just doesn’t go with Nancy.
“She let’s the dog ride with us to the bar,
she’ll haul things when your mommy plays the shopper
but she dissuades my mom-in-law with charm.”
Of all the things she does, well that’s the topper.
She’s sassy, gutsy, willing to go far,
his Lilly’s cute yet causes no alarm.

La Germania

This form is another invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes
rhyming pattern: abba acca cddc dd
format: English (quatrain, quatrain, quatrain, couplet)
Example Poem
Was I Judged?      (La Germania)
Accepting people as they are to me
has made my life a fun and fine affair.
I find surprises happen when you care.
An honest interest sets many free.
The dullest stranger has a history
that may astound, amaze, and entertain,
a history they’re happy to explain,
to work through how today has come to be.
A page long post you sent with this refrain:
“Refrain from judging people sir; just wait,
and walk in shoes that led them to their fate.”
That you would think I would not caused me pain.
I’m thankful that your post was boiler plate.
There’s no room left within my heart for hate.

Doggonnet

This form was invented by Larry Eberhart, aka Lawrencealot on AP.
It was spawned by the apparent fixation contest hosts had with brevity at the time.
This is what would be called a “gadget” sonnet.
They rhyme scheme is that of an English Sonnet: abab cdcd efef gg
All lines are six syllables.
REQUIRED:
Two of the quatrains MUST be iambic trimeter.
The other quatrain MUST be trochaic trimeter.
The couplet may be either meter.

Example Poem

Ain’t That a Bitch?

She’s a cute and tiny
pup I think I’ll like,
Don’t she have a hiney?
Where’d ya find her, Mike?
You fabricated her?
She’s just an artifact?
and that’s not really fur?
That’s me in the abstract?
I’m gonna be depressed
I’m ready for a mate.
But facts must be confessed.
I’ll be content to wait…
     before the dating starts,
find one with all the parts.

Example Poem
Volta Optional     (Curtailed Quaintrelle)
What twisted thinking must I use
to try this form yet not abuse
the notion held that sonnets meld
a volta, or a twist?
I boldly pound this keyboard now,
I think I’ve found the lee just how
allowing me, somehow the glee
I’m apt not to resist!
I’ll let this sonnet, as it should,
meander through here looking good,
then without fail, right here, curtail
a volta!  Pound my fist!
The Nevada Sonnet: is the same.
Internal rhyme with sonnet name.

PGMA Sonnet

The PGMA Sonnet was invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes
on January 28, 2009 name in honor of:
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (born April 5, 1947) is a Filipino politician who served as the 14th President of the Philippines from 2001 to 2010, as the 12th Vice President of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001, and is currently a member of the House of Representatives representing the 2nd District of Pampanga. She was the country’s second female president (after Corazón Aquino), and the daughter of former President Diosdado Macapagal.
Noted: 12/23/12
rhyming pattern: abba abba cddc dd
Example Sonnet
California Grows Nevada     (PGMA Sonnet)
When California raised the rate at which
it taxes the “rich” it assured one thing.
In Nevada cash registers will ring.
The small businesses won’t just stay and bitch.
Some are bound to stay; many though will switch
to states nearby where taxes have less sting.
These states will see a relative upswing.
Increasing taxes simply won’t enrich.
Thanks Wilson, for a few more jobs right here
in Nevada, it’s appreciated.
Though Dems seem to think it’s complicated,
it’s really not, to me it is quite clear.
When their quest to tax is finally sated
We could end-up overpopulated.

Storm Sonnet

This is a sonnet form created by Mark A. Whittington-Buckley, aka Stormy22 on Allpoetry.
This is a stanzaic sonnet consisting of 3 quatrains and a couplet
The rhyme pattern is abccdeffghiijj
It is normally written in iambic pentameter
But the poet may choose trochaic , (the poet may also choose to pen in tetrameter)
The volta or turn is to occur at or following line 9.Example Poem

We’ve Been Big-Bangwashed (Storm Sonnet )

When theories become so manifest
To question is to don the dunces cap,
the cliques and guilds are apt to take offense
at any view, to them not making sense.

Advanced math models beyond reason’s realm
with black unknowns “prove” model is correct.
The Big old Bang promoted as though law
is theory, and now we’ve found a flaw.

When Hubble posited the universe
expands, deduce from Doppler measurements
now known to scientists as the red-shift
it “proved” the model was their greatest gift.

But now clear thinking folks have found indeed,
that other forces add to red-shift speed.

Word Sonnet

Introduced originally in 1985 by New Formalist, American poet Brad Leithauser.
It has been quite popularized.  I find no formal specifications, so interpret as follows.
Quatorzain
One word per line
Consists of three quatrains plus a couplet
Volta at poets option.
I feel that to use other than an established sonnet rhyme pattern would be neglect.

Example Poem:

Diligent Shopping  ( Word Sonnet)

Pensive-
good
food
Expensive.

Tasteful
home
grown
unwasteful.

Convenient,
beer
here –
lenient.

But
What?

Volta at 13 (sneaking into it at 12)

Germanic Caudated Sonnet

This a form of the super sonnet class invented by
Jose Rizal M. Reyes on June 9, 2009 This is a triple tailed sonnet
abba bccb cddc dd / dee dff dgg
3 quatrains + couplet + 3 tercets
natural place for the volta is line 13, but poet may choose.
Example poem:
Envy then Punish the Rich      (Germanic Caudated Sonnet)
In every age some chosen few have ruled
despite the form of government in place.
Laws are the tools that often bring disgrace
Eventually when power’s overruled.

Entrusted senators, to win their race
now tell the public what it wants to hear.
Views shared with some are hushed, but its clear
your wants  will yield to those more highly placed.

Rich men can fund campaigns and make appear
Innumerable chances to obtain
considerable wealth with little pain.
Handshake contracts let fairness disappear.

`
Indeed we viewed the scoundrels with disdain
no doubt, but set our course to our own gain.

Occupy Wall street  meant that one would train
until they could perform those jobs that paid
real bucks for successful decisions made.

Some joined those rich, and walked in their terrain
and moved their family’s fortunes up a rung,
denouncing whining as song to be sung.
Alas our masses want the rich contained;
government must now give punishment to those
employers rising in the path they chose.

It happens that this poem is also an acrostic sonnet.
