Amanda’s Dark Sonnet

This form was invented by Amanda J Norton who writes on Allpoetry.com.
It is a sonnet consisting of two seven line stanza’s.
The first letters of each line form a two word acrostic, which must be alliterative.
The rhyme scheme is as follows: aabbcca abbccdd

Each line is 14 syllables although iambic heptameter is not required.
Although I inquired, the author gave no indication that a volta is required.
It must be about a “dark” topic.
Example Poem
 Dangled Darling     (Amanda’s Dark Sonnet)
D  “Do you love only me?” she asked. She asked me every day.
A  “And if you do, why do we do most everything your way?”
N  Now she was perfect starting out, complying every night
G  glad I’d removed her from the street and made her work-load light.
L  Less happy though was she to know that I used chains and whips
E  engaging her with other girls and taking her on trips
D  down in my dungeon where unseen and slimy creatures play.
D  Don’t do this, and don’t to that, more resistant day by day,
A  and naturally I can’t have that. Mine is a vampires site.
R  Retraint now hold her to the wall where all may suck and bite
L  Lenore, Lenore you’re free no more we’re taking vampire sips
I  in fact the slimy creepy things seem to prefer your hips.
N  Now when we’re though and done with you you’ll be one of us my dear.
G  Go now to sleep my love; you look delicious hanging here.

Whimsical Sonnet

This Sonnet form was introduced in a contest on Allpoetry by Numi_Earl_Grey
When I asked him to name the sonnet, this was his response.
Ah, a name – probably Wayne’s Honestly Intricate Mono-Stanza’d Imperfectly Coupleted Alternately-Layered Sonnet, or the WHIMSICAL Sonnet for short…
The following is his own introduction to the sonnet:
My friends, I shall impart this wisdom: True,
if life were thus parlayed in newish Sonnet form
we’d need some kind of rhyme and rhythm – New,
this form would break with stale traditions and the norm.
Now, why would we begin such daunting tasks?
Is it because we’re just some new iconoclasts?
Have we been drinking bourbon from our flasks?
Or do we wish to strip away old pretense masks?
The latter would be beneficial; though
you may not want such thoughts and views upon your shelves –
such innovative types (like us) forego
the safety nets that small minds cast around themselves.
My friends, you have a choice – remain secure,
or journey in, so we may walk the untrod shores…
New Sonnet Form Details:
Lines alternate between iambic pentameter and iambic hexameter (no, not sexameter!).
So that’s lines of ten and twelve syllables, all going da-daa-da-daa-da-daa…
Rhyme scheme is ABAB CCCC DEDE FF’ where F’ is a near rhyme to F.
I think the CCCC mono-rhyme stanza breaks the monotony of the ABAB, and the near rhyme at the end breaks the monotony of the perfect rhyming.
Here is the poem which he selected as the winner of the contest.
Poor William (Numi Sonnet)(Renamed Whimscal Sonnet)
Poor William’s not around to try this form—
And pity ’tis, for he would do it up right just!
And not, as I’m intending, flaunt the norm
By using Irish rime* to land on verse’s cusp.
Nor would the Master tempted be to write
In meter that’s so regular the reader might
While reading fall asleep, as if dim night
Had dawned and scared away all ambient delight.
No, he would teach a lesson with his wind
By breaking ev’ry rule rich pedants have proclaimed,
Such as the thought a trochee would rescind
The name ‘iambic’ from a line (as if ’twere lamed).
And I have tried to follow in his footsteps
Here, as opposed to following poetic goosesteps.
* Irish rime is what the Welsh call it;
the Irish themselves call it perfect ‘correspondence’
or Comharda (the closest thing the Irish have to rime),
which allows substitution of like-sounding consonants,
such as t and p (e.g. ‘just’ and ‘cusp’).

Princess Sonnet

This form was invented by Allan R. Emery, aka Joe King on Allpoetry.
“The same as any Sonnet form as far as syllable count and end rhymes. The difference is that the rhyme is reversed for the first syllable (or syllables) of each line.
For example: An English sonnet is abab cdcd efef gg so in an English Princess Sonnet the beginning rhyme would be reversed: baba dcdc fefe gg (or hh, as you can use a new beginning rhyme for the couplet if you wish) where the couplet would begin and end with a rhyming syllable (or multiple syllables if you can pull it off).
An Italian sonnet would have an end rhyme of: abba abba cdecde, which would mean the start rhyme for an Italian Princess Sonnet would be baab baab edcedc (or baab baab efcefc). This will give the sonnet a cascading quality when read aloud. Often a rhyme will repeat as it ends one line and begins the next. Other times the two end rhymes of a quatrain will be next to one another as well, with one ending one line and the other beginning the next. Done with forethought, it will not be apparent that the sonnet is any different except to a very disciplined eye or ear. Yet, the rhythm and intonation that doubling the number of rhymes in a sonnet creates unquestionably makes the sonnet more like a song.
With this, An English Sonnet with a beginning rhyme is an English Princess Sonnet. An Italian Sonnet with a beginning rhyme becomes and Italian Princess Sonnet. Etc. If you wish, you can have the same rhyme begin and end each line, which would be a Mirrored English Princess Sonnet, etc.”
***** Notice that you can use 2, 3, or 4 syllable rhymes if you can pull them off. However, the most interesting would be the first syllable of the start rhyme and the last syllable of the end rhyme, hence: ‘Mental’ as a first rhyme would rhyme with ‘detriment’ as an end rhyme.****

Reasonnet

*Reasonnet
A sonnet form invented by Ruth Poteet aka Reason on Allpoetry
A variation on a variattion of a Keats Sonnet.
10 syllables
Four tercets plus a couplet
Rhymed: aaa bbb ccc ddd ee
Example Poem
Social Engineering     (Reasonnet)
Now every day you make me break the ice.
I wouldn’t mind if you’d just ask me nice.
Instead you merely yak and give advice.
“Who made me your undocumented fool,
and set me up as your ice-breaking tool?”
I just decided to revoke that rule.
Of course we want to search for our next meal
yet all my stomping may attract a seal.
you say, “So what? That’s not a biggy deal.”
This method causes quickly, a commotion.
I backslap you with one nice friendly motion
and voila! there’s our entry to the ocean.
I found my solution to be quite neat.
It’s quicker than my using my two feet.

Curtailed Quaintrelle

A further development of (D.D. Michaels)  Quaintrelle form by Marcy Jarvis, aka ea on Allpoetry.com
it is a sonnet written as follows:
* Three four-line stanzas with syllable counts of 8, 8, 8, 6 in each stanza, written in iambic meter.
* The third line in each stanza contains internal rhymes on the 4th and 8th syllables in that line.
* The rhyme scheme for the first two stanzas is aa(bb)c dd(ee)c.
* The rhyme scheme for the third stanza is ff(gg)h. (Alternatively, the h line may rhyme with the c lines.)
* The final two lines have 8 syllables each, are in iambic meter, and rhyme as a couplet: ii.
Example Poem
Volta Optional     (Curtailed Quaintrelle)
What twisted thinking must I use
to try this form yet not abuse
the notion held that sonnets meld
a volta, or a twist?
I boldly pound this keyboard now,
I think I’ve found the lee just how
allowing me, somehow the glee
I’m apt not to resist!
I’ll let this sonnet, as it should,
meander through here looking good,
then without fail, right here, curtail
a volta!  Pound my fist!
The Nevada Sonnet: is the same.
Internal rhyme with sonnet name.

Paulo Comitatu Sonnet

Paulo Comitatu means  “Little Train” in Latin.
This Sonnet was created by Lawrencelot, using the Paulo Comitatu poetry form designed by Allan R. Emery, aka Joe King on Allpoetry.
I think all credit for the form should go to him, after all I simply added a heroic couplet to his already existing work and expanded the metric options.
Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines,  has identified sonnets of the head, the heart, and the hand.
I believe Joe King has a reverence for the traditional sonnets of the head and heart, and therefore would not himself (I suspect) compose a “gadget” sonnet-  (those which Jose refers to as sonnets of the hand.)
I have no such reservation.  Here is a form that will lend itself well to levity, capriciousness, and mirth, simply because mono-rhyme plays to that arena, as does the late volta.
This sonnet is composed of 3 quatrains, the first line of each being iambic  pentameter or tetrameter, and  the next three being one foot less (tetrameter or trimeter).
The closing couplet is Iambic pentameter.
Rhyme scheme: abbb accc deee dd

Sephallian Reverse Sonnet

The Sephallian Reverse Sonnet
was invented in April, 2013 by poet Dennis Nguyen, aka Sephallia on Allpoetry.com.
The poem is generally presented as a quatrazain since it is intended to be read either from top to bottom, or from bottom up.  There is no prohibition to
presenting it in stanzas.
The DEFINING characteristic of this form is that when read in the normal fashion, the poem has a pessimistic tone, but when read from bottom to top, it becomes and optimistic poem.
The rhyme scheme is abcdeedcbaffa and may optionally be written as a refrain sonnet as A1bcdeedcbA2ffA2A1.
Meter and line-length are at the poet’s discretion.
Volta, which is recommended, but not demanded, can occur anywhere between L4 and L11. The poem can have one in each direction.
This is a challenging and rewarding form.

Example Poem

A Measure of Character(Sephiallan Reverse Sonnet)

What you are told in confidence
if you hold secret to your breast
reward will flow in unknown ways.
An urge to propagate a tale
to pique the interest of a friend
there can surely be no good end
when confidences you assail
a gentle whispered word betrays
when silence serves your honor best
Your revelation makes no sense
I’ll never trust my thoughts with you
if other’s secrets you will spew
If rumors gain some cognizance
From what you’re told in confidence .

sonnet, without  a refrain.  the shaded lines indicate
where the refrains would occur if one were chosen.

Transitive Sonnet

This is a sonnet form created by Larry Eberhart, aka Lawrencealot
which has its roots the non-sonnet form Monometric.

It is a chameleon type sonnet, because it CANNOT be identified by looking at its apparent rhyme scheme.

It is Stanzaic with couplets and tercets enveloping a quatrain
Meter is of the poet’s choice
Line length is 8 to 13 syllables (accommodating feminine rhyme)
Recommended: Iambic  tetrameter or pentameter
Rhyme scheme: aa bbb cccc bbb aa

The sonnet takes its name from the fact that the second occurrence of rhyme set may have its true rhyme sound changed by the use of any device such as slant rhyme (heart, star or milk, walk),assonance, consonance,  eye rhyme (date, temperate), or heteronyms.

Note: such rhymes may be used anytime or never.   Transition is NOT required, only ALLOWED.

Example Poem

Child

I’m saving treasures in a dresser drawer:
a diaper pin, the little shoes you wore
with jingles in the laces, a barrette
still clasping strands of wispy hair. They whet
my hankering for things I can’t forget.

Before our paths converged, I held a view
of easy, unobstructed passage through
the challenges of motherhood. I knew
exactly what to do at twenty-two.

But that was long before my stumbling feet
were pressed into the coals, the searing heat
of constant battle forcing my retreat.
And though you’ve plunged my heart into despair
a thousand nights, I can’t forget to care.

13 Line Sonnet

The 13 Line Sonnet  is a from created by Marcy Jarvis, aka ea of Allpoetry.
The defining characteristic of the form is that any standard fourteen line sonnet which ends in a
rhyming couplet, is converted to 13 lines by provided internal rhyme within that line.

The poet may use flexibility in selecting  rhyming syllables to accommodate feminine rhyme or the meter chosen.

Obviously this cannot be applied to an Italian Sonnet with prohibits final couplet rhyme.
Note also that if the poet chooses a sonnet form like the Betwixt Sonnet, which requires the couplet to rhyme with an earlier line, ( In this case abba cbbc dbbc bb ) the 13th line rhymes must match that specified rhyme.

Example Poem
Shall I Be Ruled

A sonnet dear, you most completely write
on tablet made of stone, already lined.
That’s all she expects from bards of realm.
The gods decreed that maiden shall be mine.
Expand, compress; do both and overwhelm.

In winning, might I still chalk up a loss?
By bending early to controlling will
do I establish pretty maid as boss?
Will all my future journeys be uphill?

Forsooth! I’ll take the maid! I’m not afraid.

Storm Sonnet

This is a sonnet form created by Mark A. Whittington-Buckley, aka Stormy22 on Allpoetry.
This is a stanzaic sonnet consisting of 3 quatrains and a couplet
The rhyme pattern is abccdeffghiijj
It is normally written in iambic pentameter
But the poet may choose trochaic , (the poet may also choose to pen in tetrameter)
The volta or turn is to occur at or following line 9.Example Poem

We’ve Been Big-Bangwashed (Storm Sonnet )

When theories become so manifest
To question is to don the dunces cap,
the cliques and guilds are apt to take offense
at any view, to them not making sense.

Advanced math models beyond reason’s realm
with black unknowns “prove” model is correct.
The Big old Bang promoted as though law
is theory, and now we’ve found a flaw.

When Hubble posited the universe
expands, deduce from Doppler measurements
now known to scientists as the red-shift
it “proved” the model was their greatest gift.

But now clear thinking folks have found indeed,
that other forces add to red-shift speed.
