Kiss Cross Sonnet

Invented by Jemmy Farmer, aka Sapphic_Raven
Form is Tetrameter   (8 syllable lines)
Rhyme Pattern:  aabb ccdd eeff gg or abab cdcd efef gg
with part of each first line of each quatrain  being mirrored in the fourth line of each quatrain

Example Poem:

Where’re You Are….Kiss Cross Sonnet

My heart belongs where’re you are,
And while we danced to old love songs,
Your eyes revealed the brightest star,
Where’re you are my heart belongs.

We sealed our love in kisses sweet,
The moonlight shining high above,
As if she knew of our retreat
In kisses sweet, we sealed our love.

With hand in hand we watched the dawn,
Before we walked the barren sand,
Towards the future found the morn
We watched the dawn with hand in hand.

And now while thinking of darling you,
I know my dreams have all come true.

Kindergarten Klas Sonnet

This form, another invented by ‘fair youth’ Jose Rizal M. Reyes
rhyming pattern: abca bcab cabc dd
format: English (quatrain, quatrain, quatrain, couplet)
Example Poem:
Mary Sullivan Boren   (Kindergarten Klas Sonnet)
No poet here has helped advance my skill
(of sorts), than Mary, known as MeterMaid.
No pretention resides within my friend
but wit and talent join insight to thrill.
She’s self-appraising, able, not afraid
to re-invent herself and put an end
to stagnant comforts even when the pill
is bitter. Growth, she knew was worth the trade.
Experience ladled into brain, sautéed
with humility, wrought a gal who will,
if asked, dissemble words with which you’ve made
your poem belch, or in some way offend.
Aside from help in meter at her place,
Her writings exercise my aging face.

Keats Sonnet

4 tercets + couplet
Iambic Pentameter
Rhyme sceme: abc abd cab cde de
Example Poem:
Tell Me of Your Anger in Whispers (Keats Sonnet)

Should you be moved to speak in anger dear
I ask that first you test your words alone.
If meaning’s very clear, then is it fair?

You’ll want to be assured your meaning’s clear.
If anger stems from blunder of my own
You know I’ll fix it and will be contrite.

Are these first words intended to repair?
Harsh words once thrown will travel like a spear.
A mild re-buff will move one to atone.

No anger’s due because you know I care,
and mistakes are things that can be put right.
A shared talk always resolves a dispute.

So whisper concerns to your love, tonight
And by the way darling, I think you’re cute.

Kal’s Wondercloth Weave

Invented by  Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines
Meter: Consistent or iambic pentameter
Volta: Not Defined
rhyming pattern: abcb bcdc cded de
format: English (quatrain, quatrain, quatrain, couplet)

Example Poem:

Plan to Fit      ( Kal’s Wondercloth Weave Sonnet )

Societal complexity dictates mankind
initiate a forward-looking plan before
indoctrination’s even finished by big bro.
A standard dumbing down so they can write the score.

A uniform agenda sets the planning floor.
You plan ahead to learn to recognize the flow.
Preparing mind to find things fine so that you’ll fit.
Then you can find a niche with those that run the show.

Prepare to be a drone; we need more drones, you know.
Defer today, that’s dogma’s way of teaching it.
Embrace authority; easier than being free,
So plan ahead, so when the music stops, you’ll sit.

But, there is much to cherish living every day
in spontaneity, in fact that reeks of me.

Jeffery’s Sonnet

My guess is the middle intital “J.” in Scott J. Alcorn stands for Jeffrey. Or, this sonnet is named for the title or subject of a poem written by Alcorn. It appears the form varies from the metric pattern of most sonnets and has a unique rhyme scheme.

Jeffrey’s Sonnet is:
• 2 sestets followed by a couplet.
• syllabic, 8 syllables per line.
• rhymed, rhyme scheme aabccb ddeffe ge. There is internal cross rhyme within syllables 2 thru 4 of L7, L13 & L14.
• composed with no suggested criteria for a pivot although it appears to occur between the sestets, leaving the end couplet as a summary.

x x x x x x x a

Example Poem:

Color Me Cold   (Jeffery’s Sonnet0
I, being forced somewhere to go,
had to ignore the winter snow.
There were no airport flights today.
The clouds were threatening and grey;
I could now get there just one way.
With fear I drove into the haze.
The ice was glaze on Interstate;
I’d either die or get there late.
I fell into a motel bed.
I’d sleep some then I’d drive refreshed.
Two nights I was a captured guest.
The urge to leave was in my head.
I found instead car frozen tight.
for through the night the ice had spread.

Irish Sonnet

Irish Sonnet
This is a form invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines
Quatorzain – Generally Iambic Pentameter
Volta at or following line 9
3 Quatrains + Couplet
Rhyme scheme: abab bcbc cdcd dd

Example Poem:

Love or Lust  (Irish Sonnet)

As man might know of God within his heart ,
so too of love he might profess to know.
Both are proclaimed, and bold assertions start
with damming those who say it isn’t so.

All men know lust which makes their manhood grow,
and urges them to act the part of fool,
and girls use lust by letting pretties show,
those being bust or thighs as general rule.

All know, not guess, excitement can be cruel
when wants unsatisfied leave body weak.
We know, once satisfied, that sex is cool
and less than union is a part-time tweak.

For lust alone it’s any pard we seek.
While love requires our faith be at a peak.

Indonesian Sonnet

Indonesian Sonnet

This is a form invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines
Also referred to by him as  Indo-Chinese Double Dance
Generally Iambic Petameter
Volta at or following line 9
3 Quatrains + Couplet
Rhyme scheme: abab abab abab ab

Example Poem:

1166. Helen grew old

these wrinkles on my face I cannot hide.
my limbs are getting weaker by the day.
my eyes grow dimmer though they never cried.
my hair and crowning glory is now gray.

the beauty for which princes vowed and vied;
the beauty which fair Paris snatched away;
the beauty for which warriors dared and died:
like all that’s mortal undergoes decay.

can Penelope flaunt her secret pride
that Ulysses, for her, would madly slay?
although without her love he can’t abide,
there were just too few corpses on display.

but all is vain as time can’t be denied:
all beauty fades for we are made of clay.

My attempt

CYA Labels (Indonesian Sonnet)

“You could be a winner”, the package said,
“No purchase necessary.”  Ain’t that great?!
“Details inside”.  These thoughts went thru my head…
I’ll grab a few; for free there’s no debate.

A chainsaw file in box with text that pled,
“Don’t use while saw is running.”  Got that mate?
A mattress label warns, implying dread,
You should not swallow! (Something sure to sate.)

A box of matches warns, (Just guess ahead),
“Contents may catch fire.” Unexpected trait?
These notes don’t help and may confuse instead,
but all do serve, more humor to create.

“Shake well and buy often” can’t be misread.
Just consume more so product sales inflate.

Note: The template shows that idealized stress.  Actually in S1L1, “winner” is a trochee substitution-  which is ok, by the way.

Heroic Sonnet

The Heroic Sonnet departs from the quatorzain and stretches the verse for eighteen lines which could put into question whether or not it is a true sonnet. But, John Donne’s The Token “sings” with the best of sonnets and convinced me this verse form easily qualifies. This longer sonnet form dates back to 16th century England.

The Heroic Sonnet is:
• metric, iambic pentameter.
• a poem in 18 lines made up of 4 alternate rhymed quatrains and ending with a rhymed heroic couplet.
• rhymed, rhyme scheme abab cdcd efef ghgh ii
• composed without designated arrival of the pivot, but the poem is summarized and concluded by the ending couplet.

Note dear friends: The Heroic Sonnet is the only 18 line poem I found.

The Token by John Donne (1572-1631)

Send me some token, that my hope may live,
Or that my easeless thoughts may sleep and rest;
Send me some honey to make sweet my hive,
That in my passions I may hope the best.
I beg no ribbon wrought with thine own hands,
To knit our loves in the fantastic strain
Of new-touched youth; nor ring to show the stands
Of our affection, that as that’s round and plain,
So should our loves meet in simplicity;
No, nor the corals which thy wrist enfold,
Laced up together in congruity,
To show our thoughts should rest in the same hold;
No, nor thy picture, though most gracious,
And most desired, because best like the best;
Nor witty lines, which are most copious,
Within the writings which thou hast addressed.

Send me nor this, nor that, to increase my store,
But swear thou think’st ‘I love thee,’ and no more.

Harrisham sonnet

Created by Harrisham Minhas of Allpoetry
Harrisham Sonnet is written in 3 stanzas consisting of 2 sestets and a couplet.
For each of the stanzas, the last letter of the first word of each line
is the first letter of the first word of the next line.
There is no restriction on the starting letter of the first line in each of the stanzas.
There is no restriction on the syllable count in this form,
but it is required that the poem should have a good rhythm to it.
Rhyme scheme:  ababab cdcdcd ee

Example Poem:

Tell Me of Your Anger in Whispers (Harrisham Sonnet)
Don’t speak in anger, dear,
risks message getting lost
though words themselves are clear;
revoked by neural cost,
thrust by defensive fear.
Refrain from words just tossed.
If the meaning is clear,
revisit fairness too.
There’s no need blaming here,
we must solve “how” not “who”
only know- I revere
everything about you.
Gently whisper tonight.
Then I will make it right.

Four Epoch Sonnet

Normally Iambic Pentameter
Rhyming pattern: abba cdcd efge hh
Volta after L9
This is a form invented by Jose Rizal M. Reyes of the Philippines

Example Poem:

Four  Epoch Sonneteer  (Four Epoch Sonnet)

In school in fifty-seven I learned rhyme;
and forced exposure taught me sonnets ruled.
That all had fourteen lines; so I was schooled.
and Shakespeare was the master for all time.

Near three score years had passed before I tried
again to master bard’s acknowledged sphere.
Then meter taunted me; I was defied
by multisyllabic words quite unclear.

At last, I grasped it, got the concept down.
I tried then linking sonnets together
with structure well defined, to tell a tale
worth telling.  I, at last. composed a crown.

A sonnet redouble’–now version five,
is ready; somehow I am still alive.
